The Louvre Museum is the world's largest museum and a historic monument in Paris, France. It is housed in the Louvre Palace and was opened on August 10, 1793, during the French Revolution. For more than 600 years, this museum is a symbol of the wealth, power and decadence of the French monarchy.

The museum contains 70,000 works of art and is one of the most visited museums in the world with about 8.8 million visitors each year. It employs 2000 people who care about all those works of art.

Among the most famous works of art, the museum houses the image of Leonardo Da Vinci - "Mona Lisa", who attracts the views from the visitors by her smile. But it was not always part of the museum. At first, she decorated the walls of some of the famous palaces, and then was brought to the Louvre museum. Other famous works of art in the Louvre are: The Lady of Auxerre, The Winged Victory of Samothrace, Venus de Milo etc.

The Louvre collection includes Egyptian antiques, ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, paintings by "old masters", crowns and other artifacts by French nobles. The works are from the 6th to the 19th century BC.  More than 35 000 are exposed at any time.

In 1983, the Louvre was renovated and acquired a modern structure with a glass pyramid in the yard. It looks really modern and sophisticated with the baroque facade.

The Louvre Museum is open every day except Tuesdays and holidays, and the ticket costs 15 euros. The entrance is free for people under the age of 18, as well as for others with appropriate documentation.
